First, a few words about blogs and social media…
I don’t find any particular redeeming value in social media and don’t use it often, but am grateful for it in any case. There is a time and place for posting spontaneous messages and snapshots to share with friends, family, or even the world (if you somehow think the world will be interested in, say, what your dog had for lunch). Thankfully, other avenues than those ‘click and go’ tools are available for sharing more carefully considered images and reflections on issues we are all facing in this complicated and rapidly changing world. I believe publishing a website on matters both grave and perhaps at times insignificant, is of meaningful value for a thoughtful and receptive audience.
These blog posts and the related gallery images are meant to go hand in hand, with the intention that they be viewed as a whole. So, don’t overlook going to the galleries after reading the blogs. Images can be simply stunning on their own and some photographers dedicate their whole careers to searching for that ‘perfect photo’. But, even a master photographer like Ansel Adams did not expect to capture more than a few of that caliber in a year. This website is not that. My goal is, more simply, to create good images that are closely linked to and help tell a story with the writings in these blogs. One feeds off the other. Rather than striving to create extraordinary wall art, I hope you linger over an image that strikes you, a line in a blog that gives you pause, or both. It will succeed if it slows the click through that social media encourages and stimulates thought, reflection and perhaps discussion.
I plan to update this site from time to time as I create images and ideas around topics that I think are of interest and significance. When they both come together in a meaningful way, I will share with you some of what I find striking and provocative and hope you will think so as well.
